A king comforter does not fit in a standard home washer. People try anyway, and the result is a comforter that never rinses properly, comes out with the filling clumped to one end, and holds moisture in the middle for days. Commercial capacity machines exist for exactly this. We pick up bulky bedding, wash it with enough room for water to actually move through it, dry it completely, and bring it back. This is a per item service rather than per pound, because a comforter is a machine time problem, not a weight problem.

A comforter needs room to tumble so water and detergent can pass through the fill. Stuffed into a home drum it becomes a dense wad, the detergent never rinses out fully, and the fill migrates. Then the home dryer cannot get the core dry, which is how you get a musty comforter. Commercial machines solve both problems with drum volume and airflow, not with anything exotic.
Down needs gentler agitation and much longer, lower heat drying so the clusters loft back up instead of matting. Synthetic fill tolerates more agitation but is easily damaged by high heat, which melts and permanently flattens it. Tell us which you have, or let us look at the tag, and we handle it correctly instead of running one setting for everything.
The two busy windows for bedding here are spring, when winter bedding comes off and goes into storage, and fall, when it comes back out. Washing before storage matters more than washing after, because body oils and dust left in a comforter for six months in a closet are what create the smell people blame on the closet. If you are planning a seasonal swap, get it in before the rush.
Some items should not go in a machine. Genuinely antique quilts, comforters with failing seams that will burst, anything with visible mold growth, and dry clean only items with delicate construction.
